CONSULTATION
At the other end of the supervisory scale is the highly experienced worker. As the purpose of administrative supervision is accountability, ongoing oversight continues to be necessary. Yet, the time for independent practice has to come at some point in a practitionerâs career. The supervisor and the worker should mutually set a goal for the time when supervision can be consultation. Supervisor and worker do not always agree at what point a greater degree of independence has arrived. However, the ongoing evaluation of practice moves toward this goal. The worker who is ready to move toward consultation will keep the supervisor apprised of cases and problems. This is crucial in cases that contain possible ethical violations, abuse, legal problems, or liability issues for the agency.
The worker who has reached the point of consultation should also be expected to recognize and ask for help in problems where she is losing her professional perspective.
Joanne a longtime agency employee who also had a part-time private practice, requested a consultation on the case of Mr. K. She began by saying that she was growing anxious each time she had to meet with Mr. K. and needed some time to discuss the case. As she and the supervisor looked at past and current contacts with Mr. K., Joanne realized that she was so identified with Mr. K. that she had taken on his feelings of being abandoned by his son. The consultation ended with Joanne deciding to bring Mr. K. and his son together for a discussion of what each expected from their relationship.
Even the most experienced social worker needs a forum to talk through some of the difficult problems she confronts daily. Overidentification with an appealing client, anger at a demanding one, or frustration at an unresponsive system are all common human reactions. The supervisor can be twenty years younger with half the experience of the senior worker, but can still be helpful if she understands her role. She provides an arena to discuss, identify, and resolve problems interfering with the workerâs practice.
